Stump removal and stump grinding

The tree is gone and the stump is still in your yard. Here is what getting rid of it involves, and when you can leave it.

The stump is the part the tree job leaves behind

When a tree comes down, the trunk and branches leave with it. The stump stays. It's a trip hazard, it dulls mower blades, and it can send up sprouts for years because the roots underneath are still alive.

Lester's Tree Service specializes in challenging tree trimming, tree removal and stump removal. Tree removal and stump removal are two separate jobs, and we quote them separately, so you can pay for exactly what you need.

What grinding does, in plain terms

Stump grinding means a grinder chews the stump down below the soil line instead of pulling it out. What's left is a pile of wood chips and a patch of loose ground. It's quicker and kinder to a yard than digging out a whole root ball, and it leaves the lawn in one piece.

Stump grinding also sits on our land clearing list, next to forestry mulching, brush clearing, debris removal and site preparation. So it's work the crews already do, whether the stump is one in a front yard or one of many on a lot you're getting ready to build on.

The crews clean up after themselves, and the estimate is where you say what you want left behind.

Think about what goes there next

After grinding, the chips can be raked away or used as mulch. Roots left below the surface rot over the following years, and the soil above them settles. If you plan to lay sod, build a patio or plant a new tree on the spot, tell us at the estimate, because that changes how deep and how clean the grind needs to be.

The easiest way is to ask for the tree and the stump together, so it gets planned as one job. The quote is free and there's no obligation to book either part.

Stump call

Grind it, or leave it where it sits.

Not every stump needs to go. If leaving it is the right call, we'll tell you, same as we do when a trim will do instead of a removal.

Grind it if

  • It sits in the mow line, and every pass with the mower is a gamble.
  • You're putting a fence, a patio, a shed or a new tree right where it stands.
  • Kids or visitors cross that spot, and the stump is a trip hazard.
  • It keeps throwing up sprouts, and you're tired of cutting them back.
  • It's in the front yard and you want the tree gone, not half gone.

That's most front and side yards. Ask for the stump on the same quote as the tree removal so one crew does both.

Leave it if

  • It's tucked in a back corner nobody walks through.
  • You want a rough seat or a planter base.
  • The lot gets cleared later anyway.
